UPDATE: Morenci wins 39-14.
The Parker Broncs football team, so far undefeated this season, are heading to the semi-finals where they will battle the Morenci Wildcats on Saturday.
KLPZ Broncs commentator Brad Sale called the Morenci team “tough and disciplined” but said that if the Broncs could keep a key running back at bay, they could be in with a chance to go forward.
“What Morenci lacks in size they make up for in speed,” Sale told Parker Live. “This will be one of those games that comes down to the wire.”
Broncs fans have been thrilled by the small town team’s performance statewide this season, with 11 straight wins in a row. On Saturday, local supporters planned to show up on sidewalks between 12:15pm and 12:30pm to see the Broncs off on their road trip to Desert Vista High School in the Ahwatukee Foothills in south Phoenix.
According to KATO’s Lee Patterson, Morenci and Parker will be meeting for just the third time in 2A series history. Both teams have beaten the other, Parker in the 1970s and Morenci as recently as 2018, a recent enough memory to serve as a subject of either fear or determination.
“Your Broncs have their work cut out for them,” Sale said. “While Parker has a triple threat in the backfield with Taylor, Poole, and Nopah, Morenci has sophomore running back Michael Casillas. He has rushed for 1759 yards and 24 touchdowns on the season. If the Broncs can contain Casillas, we will have a very good chance to advance.”
