News from Afghanistan

We have shipped our packages to FOB Wilson in Afghanistan.  In doing so we had prayers from Michael Penn and Jerry Kinman from the First Baptist Church.  Today I am asking that you include your prayers also.  I just received this message from FOB Wilson.  Our men and women both in uniform and out of uniform, civilian personnel are in danger.  So with the packages I want each and everyone to include a prayer of safety.  Click to read the message.

Traffic jammed on I-10 to LA

All westbound lanes are blocked at this hour on I-10 west of Parker going toward Orange County/Los Angeles. A semi has turned over with one fatality with a hazardous spill between Palm Springs and Cabazon, blocking all westbound lanes and creating what one driver reporting to KLPZ calls “the worst traffic jam I’ve ever been in”. California Highway Patrol says the traffic is backed up for miles, since there are no side roads around this crash. Motorists in the Parker area should take I-40 north of Lake Havasu City instead.

High Court denies County’s Yakima appeal

The Arizona Supreme Court has denied La Paz County’s petition to review its request for an appeal. The latest in the ongoing legal embroilment with Yakima Compost Company is expected to put the onus back upon the County Board of Supervisors to negotiate a settlement with Jim Willett, Yakima’s owner. Some attempts have been made in the past, but the Supervisors appear to have wished to extinguish all legal options first. That seems to now be the case.

ADF intervenes in church tax tussle

A Christian organization known for defending church rights around America is intervening in the property tax bill of a Quartzsite church after the church received a bill they claim they do not owe.

The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF), founded by well-known conservative Christian leaders like Bill Bright and James Dobson, says the Isaiah 58 Project church should not owe any property taxes on the land they have owned since 2006 because they are a non-profit organization.

An ADF press release states:

The assessor granted the tax exemption but waited three years to do so and only granted it for the years 2009 and later, leaving the church with a bill for approximately $50,000 in back taxes for the years 2006-2008 that it should not owe. After the assessor refused to correct the error, the church contacted the Arizona Department of Revenue, which issued a letter in June clearly stating that the church is exempt from property taxes under state law and that the “tax-exempt status granted by this letter is effective from and after August 24, 2006.” Nonetheless, the assessor has not acted to correct the error. Instead, it sold the tax lien on the church to a private investor who now holds the right to foreclose on the lien in February of next year.

The ADF has sent a letter to County Treasurer Leah Castro asking her to act within her statutory power to override the tax bill and correct what it says is a bureaucratic error. (The letter is available here.)

La Paz County Assessor George Nault was immediately familiar with the situation, and says he is confident his office acted according to the law and that the property tax bill is correct.

ADEQ gives money to Parker to clean up asbestos

ADEQ Press Release

Arizona Department of Environmental Quality officials announced today that a $56,000 grant has been awarded to the Town of Parker for the cleanup of small quantities of asbestos in three town buildings which the town wants to bring in compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

The town received a community development block grant for the barrier removal project, to make the buildings more accessible for the handicapped, but funds from that grant can not be used for asbestos cleanup. The work will be performed at the town hall/police station, the library and at the community/senior center.

“We commend the Town of Parker for taking action to accommodate all of its residents and redeveloping in an environmentally sensitive manner,” ADEQ Director Benjamin H. Grumbles said. “Our state response grant program is all about partnering with towns like Parker to reduce environmental hazards.”

Town officials have said the asbestos in the structures is stable and does not pose a health hazard. The buildings were constructed between the mid-1960s and 1983, when asbestos was used as a common material for insulation.

Power outages

Repeated APS power outages are affecting Parker (at least) for the past 25 minutes. Stay tuned for updates.

—–

UPDATE 1: A representative for APS tells Parker Live crews are attempting to find the ‘feeders’ which appear to be damaged in today’s high winds, to repair them. No timescales were given for a fix.

—–

UPDATE 2: APS says its crews have identified and partially fixed the problem, which involved both phases of power lines at Palo Verde and Ocotillo Avenue in Parker clanging against each other in the wind. 98% of the town should have power restored now, the remaining 2% (mostly residential) will be restored within one hour.

Found at BlueWater Resort & Casino

This dog was found at the side entrance of BlueWater Resort & Casino on Thanksgiving Day early in the afternoon. His feet were wet as if he might have come up from the boat launch. Searched for owners. He knows basic commands and has a very good disposition. No collar (we put the one on him in the picture), not altered. Somebody surely must be missing him. He is very sweet and gets along well with humans and other dogs. I have notified all animal control offices (CRIT F&G and the Town of Parker PD), BWRC, and the BWRC RV Park.

Update: As of November 29, 2010 4:09 pm, no one has claimed this dog.

Update: December 1, 2010: Dog has been adopted to a great new family.
